Laboratory Assistant / Overview Key Responsibilities and Expectations Laboratory Assistant, Johnson City United Health Services is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to join the Wilson Medical Center Specimen Management Team in Johnson City, NY.
The Laboratory Assistant performs non-technical assignments within the Specimen Management Department.
This is a BENEFITS-ELIGIBLE position.

40 - Laboratory Assistant Overview Under the supervision of the Section Supervisor, the Laboratory Assistant performs Laboratory non-technical assignments in a timely manner according to UHS, Hospitals', Infection Control, Laboratory and Departmental Policies and Procedures, NYSDOH, CDC Blood and Body Fluids policies and procedures.
Priority is given to STAT specimens and will require immediate processing.
UHS Wilson Medical Center is a 280-bed hospital and Level II Trauma Center.
In this position, you'll serve a medical facility that is a regional leader in cardiac surgery, neurosurgery and neurosciences, cancer care, maternity and high-risk obstetrics, neonatal intensive care, blood disorder treatment, and physical therapy and rehabilitation.
Wilson is a bustling hospital and is a 24-hour designated stroke and chest pain center.
Laboratory Assistant Key Responsibilities and Expectations Maintains laboratory department supplies (ordering of reagents and consumables) and inventory tracking systems.
As directed, participate in new material supply evaluations and investigation of performance issues with existing supplies.
Monitors and documents environment, refrigerator and freezer temperatures.
Performs assessment of specimen quality and quantity, following UHSH Laboratory guidelines and under technical supervisor direction.
Aliquots/centrifuges specimens according to established procedures.
Stores and retrieves specimens for add-on tests, repeat testing, reflex testing, or as otherwise required.
Enters data into the computer, such as patient demographics, insurance information and test orders.
Performs clerical tasks and telephone communications, relating to the processing and testing of laboratory specimens.
Transports specimens and/or requisitions and reports within the hospital and between laboratory departments, as applicable.
Prepares, sorts, tracks, packs, and arranges shipping of specimens between the UHS lab sites and to reference labs; understands reference lab manual and processes for remediation of specimen issues; acts as intermediary between UHSH Lab and reference testing facility.
Loads carriers, cassettes, racks (specimen holders) with appropriate sample types in preparation for placement on a laboratory analyzer.
Generates and checks daily pending logs to ensure that send-out specimens are labeled properly, recorded/logged on a daily log, and shipped appropriately to the correct testing agency/reference laboratory.
Ensures specimens are handled properly from collection to shipment.

High School Diploma or equivalent Preferred:
Enrolled in a degree program in a related field of study Work Environment All work is performed in offices that require working in close quarters with other employees.
The offices are air conditioned/heated.
Lab coat, gloves, and goggles as needed.
Must be able to lift and move a minimum of 25 lbs.
Handles blood and body fluids.
Most work is performed in heated and air conditioned surroundings.
Ability to lift 25 pounds, walking reaching, standing and sitting.
When performing laboratory assignments, eyewear, gloves, masks/face shields must be worn according to NYS Dept.
of Health, and UHSH Infection Control, and CDC Blood and Body Fluids Policies and Procedures.
